• Patients with essential hypertension
• Patients who are eligible and able to participate in the study Exclusion Criteria
• Severe hypertension
• History or evidence of a secondary form of hypertension
• History of Hypertensive encephalopathy or cerebrovascular accident. Other protocol-defined exclusion criteria may apply.
